Bio
Carmen Martínez Arroyo is an Associate Professor of Architectural Design at the Madrid School of Architecture (ETSAM), where she has been teaching since 1998. In 2013, she was a Visiting Professor at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM) in Querétaro, Mexico. She was also a Visiting Professor at the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra in 2015. In 2017, she completed a teaching and research stay at the Politecnico di Milano, where she also served as a Visiting Professor in 2018.
She graduated as an Architect from ETSAM in 1993. Her academic training included a scholarship at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV) between 1991 and 1992. She earned her PhD in Architecture from ETSAM in 2004 and was awarded the Extraordinary Doctoral Thesis Prize.
She served as Deputy Director of the Department of Architectural Design between 2008 and 2012 and as Doctoral Programme Coordinator from 2005 to 2009. She has been awarded two six-year national research distinctions (sexenios de investigación). Her research has been published in journals such as Arquitectura Viva, ZARCH, DPA, RITA, and REIA, and her scholarly work was recognized at the XIII Spanish Architecture Biennial (2016) and the XI Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism (2019).
In 1993, together with Rodrigo Pemjean, she founded arroyopemjean arquitectos. Notable projects include the Town Hall and Community Centre in Madarcos (1994–1996), the Restoration of the Town Hall of Somosierra (1995–1999), the Redevelopment of San Roque Square in Chinchón (2002), and the Headquarters of the Official College of Architects in Salamanca (2004–2010). Her work has received numerous awards, including recognition at the IV Spanish Architecture Biennial (1997), the Community of Madrid Architecture Awards (1999), and the COAM Urban Design Award (2001).
She has delivered lectures and conferences in Spain, Portugal, Mexico, and Italy.
