Burgos Ruiz, Francisco

Architect and Doctor of Architecture from ETSAM-UPM (Cum Laude, 2000), Francisco Burgos has over thirty years of experience in architecture, housing, public space design and urban and territorial regeneration. Tenured Professor in the Department of Architectural Design at ETSAM-UPM and founding partner of Burgos & Garrido Arquitectos (2002), his practice spans from the building to the territory, with particular attention to public housing, civic facilities and the integration of architecture, infrastructure and landscape.

His built work includes housing, cultural, healthcare and educational buildings—such as the plans and refurbishment of La Paz University Hospital or the extension of the Lima Art Museum (MALI)—alongside landmark public-space and river-corridor projects such as Madrid Río, the integration of the Tagus River in Toledo and the Nervión Riverside Park. Many of these works are the result of first prizes in national and international competitions. Madrid Río, awarded the 12th Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design by Harvard University, established the practice as an international reference.

In all of them, housing and the city are understood as a single project: to build liveable, collective and sustainable spaces. His career combines professional practice with intensive research and teaching—including his role as curator of the Ibero-American Architecture and Urbanism Biennial and as a visiting professor at universities across Europe and the Americas—guided by a vision of architecture in the service of shared life.
