Casqueiro Barreiro, Fernando

Fernando Casqueiro Barreiro graduated as an Architect from the Madrid School of Architecture (ETSAM) in 1981. He earned his PhD in Architecture from ETSAM–UPM in 2001 and was awarded the Extraordinary Doctoral Thesis Prize by the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) in 2002.

He has been a Professor of Architectural Design at ETSAM since 1991.

A researcher and founding member of the consolidated research group ARKRIT, he has directed several research projects funded by both the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Research.

Most of his professional work has been developed through commissions obtained in international, national, and invited public competitions. Through these competitions, he has been commissioned to design and supervise the construction of eight educational buildings, five collective housing developments, two indoor sports centres, two indoor swimming pools, among other projects. He has also led the planning teams responsible for six General Urban Development Plans in the regions of Galicia and Cantabria.

In collaboration with engineer Florencio del Pozo, he received awards in competitions for the design of major viaducts in Colindres (Cantabria) and San José de Guadaíra (Seville). His work has been exhibited in Santiago de Compostela, Stuttgart, Paris, Portugal, Zurich, and Madrid.

He is the author of numerous specialized and outreach articles published in professional journals and digital platforms, including ArchDaily and Plataforma Arquitectura.

He is also the author of the books The Crystal Pavilion (El Pabellón de Cristal) and The Maritime Station of Dénia (La Estación Marítima de Dénia). His book Canon of Twentieth-Century School Buildings (Canon de Centros Escolares del Siglo XX) received an award at the Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism in 2016.
