Coll-Barreu, Juan

Juan Coll-Barreu (MArch PhD RA, Extraordinary Graduation Award, Spain’s National Award for University Degree Completion) is Full Professor of Architectural Design at the Madrid School of Architecture (ETSAM, UPM), where he directs the Coll-Barreu Teaching Unit. He is also a Full Faculty Member of the Graduate School at NC State University in the United States.

Educated and professionally trained in Spain and Los Angeles, he is a frequent lecturer and has written extensively on modern American architecture and contemporary issues. He is the author of Construcción de los paisajes inventados: Los Ángeles doméstico 1900–1960 (Fundación Caja de Arquitectos, 2004) and Richard J. Neutra VDL Research House (Fundación Caja de Arquitectos, 2010). In the United States, he has published Spaniards in the USA (NC State Design, 2018), Meet Myths (Paint Rock, 2019), and A Thousand Sources (Paint Rock, 2026). He has also published numerous articles on architectural theory in leading specialist journals. He has directed research laboratories in Spain and lecture series in the United States.

In 2001, he founded the architectural practice COLL-BARREU ARQUITECTOS. Its work has been extensively published, received numerous international awards, and exhibited at some of the world’s leading institutions and venues for architecture, including the Skyscraper Museum in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit, the Design Museum in Toronto, and Archizoom in Lausanne.
