Bio
Carmen Espegel is an Architect, PhD, and Full Professor in the Department of Architectural Design at the Madrid School of Architecture (Polytechnic University of Madrid). Her research focuses primarily on Collective Housing, Modern Heritage, and Women in Architecture. She directs the Collective Housing Research Group (GIVCO). Her critical approach to architecture is reflected in publications such as Women Architects in the Modern Movement (2018), Collective Housing 1992–2015, Vol. II (2016), Collective Housing in Spain, 20th Century 1929–1992, Vol. I (2013), Eileen Gray: Objects and Furniture Design (2013), Modern Atmospheres (Aires Modernos, 2010), E.1027: Maison en bord de mer by Eileen Gray and Jean Badovici (2010), and Heroines of Space (Heroínas del Espacio, 2008).
In the academic field, she has delivered lectures and keynote presentations in the United States, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina. She teaches in the Master in Collective Housing (MCH, Madrid–Zurich), the Housing Master’s Programme at Roma Tre University, and the doctoral programme at the School of Architecture of Porto.
Professionally, together with Concha Fisac, she founded the practice espegel-fisac arquitectos. Their work has received numerous awards in architectural competitions, many of which have been built, including projects such as Tiburtino III (Rome), Chamartín Market, the Social Housing Development at Embajadores 52 (both in Madrid), the Pavilion in Isabel II Park (Palencia), and the Cultural Centre and Town Hall of Gumpoldskirchen (Austria).
Their work has been featured in prestigious publications and journals such as El Croquis, Arquitectura Viva, ON Diseño, Arquitectura, Pasajes, Arquitectos, Future, and Oris. It has also been exhibited internationally, including at the Shanghai World Expo (China), the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London, and the AEDES Gallery am Pfefferberg in Berlin.
