García Fernández, Carlos

Carlos García Fern holds a PhD in Architecture and he received the Extraordinary Doctoral Prize from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. He also holds a Master's degree from Columbia University in New York, where he studied as a Fulbright scholar, and a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Madrid (ETSAM). He completed his studies in the Netherlands (TU Delft) and has been a fellow at the Spanish Academy in Rome and a visiting researcher at Keio University in Tokyo at the Sejima Lab. He is currently professor in the Department of Architectural Projects at ETSAM.

He is co-founder and principal of DABG together with Begoña de Abajo since 2014. Their work is developed primarily through projects awarded in architectural competitions, including the IMPLUVIUM in Reinosa, the prizes in Europan 18, 15, 14 and 13, or the renovation of the National Livestock Market in Torrelavega with Espacio Vacante Estudio. Their built work has received a Detail Prize, the Bigmat, the Ortega Alloza COACAN, and the Luis Moreno Mansilla Mention. It has been published on numerous recognized platforms and exhibited at international exhibitions and conferences, including the New European Bauhaus, the German Architecture Museum and the AIA in New York. In 2015 he received the Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism award for the Sotogrande Sailing School, which he designed together with Héctor Fernández Elorza.

His professional, research and pedagogical practice focuses on spatial systems and organizations with the potential to adapt and transform, the tectonic logics of industrialization and circularity and more broadly, strategic design.
