Martínez Castillo, Alberto
He co-founded the architectural practice Matos Castillo Arquitectos with Beatriz Matos in 1985. He holds a PhD in Architecture for his dissertation, “Max Bill: Variations on the Search for Beauty,” for which he received the UPM Extraordinary Doctorate Award. He is a tenured professor of architectural design at ETSAM, UPM (1987-2026), and has taught at CEU Architecture, the European University of Madrid and the University of Navarra.
From the outset, his professional career has been based primarily on architectural competitions as a means of bringing together research and design practice. He regularly participates in round-table discussions, workshops, summer courses, lectures, exhibitions and competition juries.
His work has been widely published in national and international books and journals. Notable completed projects include the Garay industrial building and, more recently, the refurbishment of the Boadilla Library, the new Faculty of Medicine in Badajoz, the restoration of the Convent of the Salesas in Pamplona and the Boadilla Integrated Security Centre. After devoting many years to research into housing, he is currently overseeing the construction of the Holy Week Museum in Zamora.
He has received more than fifty awards in architectural competitions, as well as numerous prizes and distinctions for his completed work. These include the Andrea Palladio International Award (1993), the 2nd Exhibition of Young Spanish Architects Award (1992), the Madrid City Council Award (1998, 2001 and 2003), the ASPRIMA Award (2004 and 2024), the COAM Award (2000, 2005, 2022 and 2024), the Hispalyt Award (2024), finalist recognition at the FAD Awards (1999, 2004 and 2024), and an award at the 16th Spanish Biennial of Architecture (2024).
