Nanclares da Veiga, Alberto
Bio
Alberto Nanclares was born in Madrid in 1979. He is a visual artist, urban activist, architect, and DJ.
He studied Architecture at the Madrid School of Architecture (ETSAM), completing his final degree project in the field of Development Cooperation with a proposal for the Historic Centre of Montevideo, co-supervised by Marcelo Danza from the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urbanism (FADU) of the University of the Republic of Uruguay (UdelaR). He has developed an international career in the fields of visual arts and social innovation through the collective Basurama.
He began teaching at ETSAM in 2015.
Among other distinctions, he has received the following awards:
- Social Design Circle Honoree, Curry Stone Design Foundation (2017)
- Award for Architectural and Urban Merit, Premis d’Honor de la Vila de Pedreguer (2017)
- Gràffica Award, Gràffica Magazine (2015)
- ART-EX Grant for International Artistic Projects, Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) (2014–2015)
- Award for Collective Urban Commitment, Club de Debates Urbanos (2006)
Since 2001, he has been a founding member of the Basurama collective, through which he has developed more than one hundred projects related to public art, environmental issues, and public space across five continents. Together with numerous other collectives and social movements, he has also played a significant role in the development of Madrid’s “emergent urbanism,” contributing to projects such as El Campo de Cebada and autoBarrios San Cristóbal.
He has delivered lectures and workshops at universities and institutions around the world, including NTNU Trondheim, FADU–University of São Paulo, the University of Maputo, the Korea Design Foundation, and the Communication University of China (CUC).
